Maura Murray: A Car on Route 112, an Unresolved Disappearance

FlashUnfolded Editorial · source-based case file · 1-minute read · 2 sources

The nursing student was missing when police reached the New Hampshire crash scene on February 9, 2004.

At about 7:30 p.m. on February 9, 2004, Maura Murray's black Saturn left Route 112 in Haverhill, New Hampshire and became stuck. The FBI says the roads were snow-covered. When police arrived, the twenty-one-year-old was not there. She has not been seen or heard from since. [S1]

The journey before the crash

Murray had left the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she was studying nursing. The FBI says she had not told others about the pending trip to New Hampshire. Earlier that day, an ATM surveillance camera recorded her wearing a dark jacket and jeans. [S1]

These are separate points on the known timeline: a recorded appearance earlier in the day, a vehicle off the road that evening and an absence when officers arrived. The car establishes a location; it does not establish what happened after the crash.

More than a roadside mystery

Her family's website describes a student-athlete from Hanson, Massachusetts, a nursing junior and a person whose relatives have continued searching for her. The family's account identifies the Route 112 crash as the beginning of the unresolved disappearance, rather than its explanation. [S2]

The FBI also records her previous education at West Point, her running and her enjoyment of hiking in the White Mountains. In February 2024, investigators released an age-progressed image. [S1]

An age progression is a search aid depicting a possible older appearance. It should not be confused with a photograph establishing that she was located after 2004.

The continuing appeal

The FBI's public listing still seeks information. It directs anyone with relevant knowledge to an FBI office, an American embassy or consulate, or its anonymous online tip service. [S1]

The enduring question is what happened between the roadside incident and the police arrival. That missing interval remains unresolved in the official appeal. Neither the passage of time nor the popularity of theories supplies a documented ending.
