Sheila von Wiese-Mack: One Killing, Separate Proceedings in Two Countries

FlashUnfolded Editorial · source-based case file · 1-minute read · 2 sources

Heather Mack’s American sentence and Tommy Schaefer’s later federal plea must retain their different legal labels.

Sheila von Wiese-Mack was killed during a Bali vacation in August 2014. Her daughter, Heather Mack, later admitted conspiring with her boyfriend to kill her. In January 2024, a US federal court sentenced Mack to twenty-six years in prison for her role in that conspiracy. [S1]

The admitted plan

The Justice Department's sentencing release says Mack arranged Tommy Schaefer's travel using her mother's credit card. Messages exchanged after his arrival discussed killing her. The release describes the August 12 killing and the attempt to leave the hotel with the victim's body concealed in luggage. [S1]

That account is drawn from the prosecution's description of Mack's plea and sentencing. It is not permission to erase the procedural distinctions in a different defendant's American case.

The later US proceeding

In February 2026, AP reported Schaefer's return from Indonesia and his not-guilty plea to US federal charges. He had already been convicted in Indonesia. AP said an American trial had been set for January 2027. [S2]

An Indonesian conviction, Mack's American guilty plea and Schaefer's American not-guilty plea are three distinct parts of the record. One defendant's admission does not turn another's pending US charge into a US conviction.

The person behind the case label

The luggage detail became the shorthand by which the case was widely known. Sheila's name should remain more prominent than the method of concealing her body.

The prosecution crossed national borders and years of proceedings. A concise account can explain that history without treating a scheduled trial as a completed one or making a spectacle of the victim's remains.
