Michael McGuire had about 45 minutes between finishing work and reaching a basketball event with his young son Easton. Rather than go home to wash and change, the Kentucky coal miner went straight to the game.
He sat in the stands at the University of Kentucky's Blue-White scrimmage in Pikeville in October 2022, still wearing work clothes and coal dust. A photograph of father and son drew attention online and reached coach John Calipari.
Calipari invited the family to attend a game at Rupp Arena as his guests. That invitation came after the moment that made the photograph memorable: McGuire had found a way to be there for Easton's first basketball experience. He arrived as he was, with time beside his son taking priority over a change of clothes.
