A Little Girl Handed The Cashier A Ziploc Bag. Inside Was Something Nobody Expected
The line went still as the cashier opened it and read what was written on the front.
The girl couldn't have been more than seven, and she marched up to the register clutching a sandwich bag heavy with coins. In front of her, a young mother was quietly counting out whether she could afford the last few items on the belt.
The bag was labeled in crooked marker: 'BIRTHDAY MONEY — FOR SOMEONE WHO NEEDS IT.' The girl set it on the counter and pointed at the woman's groceries.
The cashier looked at the girl's mother, standing a few feet back with her hands over her mouth, who just nodded. They counted eleven dollars and forty cents in dimes and quarters, exactly enough to cover the difference.
The young mother knelt down and asked the girl why. 'Because it's more fun to buy someone else stuff than buy myself stuff,' the girl said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Half the line was crying by the time the receipt printed.
