A Single Sheep Once Caused A Traffic Jam That Lasted Days

It sounds ridiculous, but the way animals move in groups can bring everything grinding to a halt.

You would think a sheep is far too gentle a creature to cause chaos, but put enough of them together and the results can be surprisingly disruptive.

Sheep are powerfully driven by instinct to follow one another. If a single animal takes off in a certain direction, the entire flock will often surge after it without hesitation.

This herd instinct means a whole flock can pour onto a road, a bridge or a narrow lane at once, clogging the route far more stubbornly than any single stray animal ever could.

It is a vivid lesson in the power of following the crowd. One sheep making a move can drag hundreds along with it, and suddenly an ordinary path is completely and hopelessly blocked.
