In this fictional story, Annie stays home when her former husband Ryan marries her younger sister Lina. Their nine-year-old daughter Amelia attends, carrying a candle intended for a ceremony celebrating the new household.
When she is asked to light it from the couple's candle, Amelia wants to know where her mother fits. She leaves the ceremony with her candle. Later, in the garden, she asks whether the baby her parents lost still counts as family.
Annie comes when Amelia needs her and takes her home. Ryan begins to acknowledge that he has expected others to be comfortable with choices he made.
Amelia keeps the candle. The next evening, she lights it at the kitchen table with her mother's help while her siblings gather around. She can love her father without pretending the family that came before has vanished.
