A Whole Country Once Ran Out Of Time For Ten Days And It Was Legal

People went to sleep and woke up nearly two weeks later, and the calendar was to blame.

Imagine going to bed on a Thursday and waking up to find it was suddenly the middle of the following week. For millions of people centuries ago, this actually happened.

The old Julian calendar had drifted out of sync with the seasons over the centuries, leaving the dates slightly wrong compared to the actual position of the sun.

To fix it, a new calendar was introduced and the correction meant simply deleting a chunk of dates. In some countries, an entire stretch of days was skipped and never officially existed.

People reportedly grumbled that they had been robbed of time, and some worried about rent and wages for days that vanished. Your calendar is not as solid and eternal as it feels.
