Amy Jones-Elliott arrived in June 2012, far earlier than her family had expected. Her twin sister Katie did not immediately follow. Their mother Maria’s contractions stopped after Amy’s birth, beginning an unusual period in which one daughter needed neonatal care while the other remained in the womb.
Maria stayed under hospital care as the weeks passed. Katie was born on August 27, 87 days after Amy, and both daughters survived. Their family later described the long wait and thanked the medical team that had cared for them.
The births attracted world-record attention, but for the family the central outcome was having both girls together. When Amy reached her first birthday, Katie’s was still almost three months away. Their separate birthdays marked an extraordinary beginning to the same twin pregnancy.
