Locals walked past it every summer. It took one kid with nothing better to do to solve a decades-old mystery.

It sat half in the water at the edge of the swimming hole, flat on top and just the wrong shape to be a good seat. Generations of families had used it as a landmark. 'Meet you at the rock.'

Nobody ever thought much about it beyond that. It was furniture, basically, part of the scenery you stop noticing after the first visit. Certainly nobody had ever bothered to move it.

Then came a slow afternoon, a restless teenager, and the kind of boredom that makes you do pointless things just to feel something. He decided, for no reason at all, to see if he could tip it over.

What was pressed into the underside had been hidden there long enough that half the town has a different theory about how it got there. The most likely explanation is the one that gives everybody chills.
