Handball Is the Most Argued Rule in Soccer — Here's What Actually Counts

Hint: it's not 'ball touches arm, penalty.' It never was.

No rule will start more arguments at your World Cup watch party this summer than handball. The ball hits an arm in the box, half the room screams penalty, and the other half screams back. Who's right?

The rule cares about more than contact. Deliberately touching the ball with your hand or arm is always an offense. Accidental contact becomes one mainly when the arm makes the body 'unnaturally bigger' — stuck out wide or above the shoulder.

An arm tucked into the body, or positioned naturally for a slide or jump? Usually play on, even in the penalty area. The line between the two is exactly as blurry as it sounds, which is why VAR spends so much time on it.

One clean exception: score with your hand or arm — even by accident — and the goal is always disallowed. Everything else is a judgment call. Sorry. That's the rule's honest answer, and nobody at your party will accept it.
