He Left A Note In The Library Book For A Stranger. Twelve Years Later He Got An Answer

He scribbled it as a joke and forgot all about it. Then a letter arrived with no return address.

As a lonely teenager, he'd tucked a note into the back of his favorite library novel: 'If you're reading this and you're having a hard time too, it gets better. I promise. Whoever you are, you're not alone.'

He signed it with just his first initial and a little doodle of a lighthouse, then returned the book and forgot it existed. Years passed. He grew up, moved away, and never thought about it again.

This spring a plain envelope arrived at his parents' old address, which a kind new owner forwarded along. Inside was the original note, worn soft at the folds, and a letter from a woman who'd found it during her own darkest year.

She wrote that she'd carried the lighthouse doodle in her wallet for over a decade, and that it had, quite literally, gotten better. 'I've been trying to find you to say thank you,' she wrote. 'You saved a stranger you never met.'
