I Tried the 'World Cup Warm-Up' at My Local Pickup Game and Pulled Zero Muscles for the First Time Ever

Five minutes, no equipment, and my hamstrings finally forgave me.

Every adult pickup player knows the ritual: arrive, wave, jog for eleven seconds, then play until something in the back of your leg files a formal complaint.

Watching this summer's World Cup warm-ups, I noticed the players never hold a stretch. Everything moves. Leg swings, open-the-gate hips, skips, progressive sprints. So I copied the structure at my Tuesday game.

Five minutes: thirty seconds of jogging, leg swings front and side, walking lunges with a twist, high knees, then three half-speed runs building to a real sprint. That's it. That's the whole secret.

First session in two years where nothing tweaked, twinged, or seized. The pros warm up moving because soccer is played moving. Static stretching before a game, it turns out, was the boomer trap all along.
