No VAR, no stoppage time, and the fence is automatically out of bounds.

<p>Step outside any summer evening and you'll hear it: the thump of a ball against a garage door and a self-appointed commentator narrating in two languages.</p>

<p>Driveway World Cups have their own laws. The mailbox is a goalpost. The dog is a neutral defender. Whoever scores gets to do the announcer voice.</p>

<p>A tournament on home soil did what a thousand youth clinics couldn't — it made the ball the default toy of an American summer.</p>

<p>Somewhere in one of those driveways is a kid who'll play in a real one someday. Tonight, though, the trophy is a juice box, and it is everything.</p>
