Lightning Strikes Earth 8 Million Times a Day — Here's Where It Hits Hardest

One lake on Earth gets zapped so often it has its own lightning season.

Around 100 lightning bolts hit our planet every single second — that adds up to roughly 8 million strikes a day.

But lightning isn't spread evenly. Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela is the undisputed champion, where warm lake air collides with cool mountain winds to spark storms on more than 200 nights a year.

Sailors once used the near-constant flashes as a natural lighthouse, navigating by a storm that almost never quits.

The wildest part? A single bolt can heat the air around it to about 30,000 kelvins — several times hotter than the surface of the sun — all in a fraction of a second.
