Firefighter James Trounson met Martha during a difficult call near Helston, Cornwall. The eight-year-old terrier was beside her owner, who had died. Getting the frightened dog safely out of the house was part of his job that day.
With patience, Martha came to him and jumped into his arms. There was no immediate relative to take her, and Trounson’s family had been looking for a companion for their collie, Merlin. After RSPCA checks, he adopted her.
Martha’s new life included joining Trounson on his daily rounds and settling into a household with other animals. He told ITV that she slept near Millie the cat and came along in the tractor. The person who first helped her leave a difficult scene became the person who gave her somewhere permanent to stay.
