Metal or Molded? The Boot Stud Decision That Happens Hours Before Kickoff

<p>Hours before kickoff at this summer's tournament, you'll see players strolling the field in sneakers, pressing their heels into the turf. It's not a photo op.</p>

<p>They're testing the ground. Soft, wet grass calls for longer screw-in studs that bite deep. Firm, dry summer pitches — common in a North American July — favor shorter molded studs.</p>

<p>Get it wrong and the consequences are real: too much grip on hard ground locks the foot and strains knees; too little on soft ground means slipping at the worst moment.</p>

<p>Many players carry multiple pairs to every match and decide during warm-ups. The game within the game starts long before the whistle.</p>
