My Daughter Quit Soccer. Then We Went to One Watch Party — What Happened Next Broke Me a Little

She quit in the spring. Not dramatically — she just stopped wanting to go, and after one too many silent car rides home, we let it end. I told myself I was fine with it. I mostly wasn't.

Then the World Cup came to our country, and a neighbor hosted a watch party. No jerseys required, no stakes, just a projector in a garage and forty people from the block.

Halfway through the second half, I looked over and she was on her feet, screaming at a near-miss with the neighbor kids. That night she asked if her cleats still fit.

Here's what broke me a little: she never hated soccer. She hated the car rides where I reviewed her performance. She's playing pickup at the park now. I stay home, and it's the best coaching decision I ever made.
