<p>The referee's whistle is the sound of soccer. But early officials had no whistle at all — they waved handkerchiefs and simply shouted.</p>

<p>Stranger still, early 'referees' often stood off the field. Captains settled disputes, and the referee was only consulted — referred to — when they couldn't agree. That's where the name comes from.</p>

<p>The whistle arrived in the late 1800s, borrowed from police use, and instantly gave one person the power to freeze 22 players with a single breath.</p>
