A routine trip to the supermarket turned into an unforgettable experience for one British grandfather after he discovered something alive and completely unexpected hiding inside a bag of broccoli.
Neville Linton, a 63-year-old grandfather from Birmingham, England, had simply been doing his regular grocery shopping when he purchased a bag of fresh broccoli from an Aldi store in Stourbridge, West Midlands. There was nothing unusual about the purchase at first.
Like countless shoppers, he took the vegetables home, placed them in the refrigerator and expected to use them for an ordinary family meal. Three days later, however, everything changed.
When Linton removed the broccoli from its packaging and began preparing it in his kitchen, he noticed something moving near the stem. At first, he reportedly thought it might be an ordinary insect or caterpillar that had somehow remained among the vegetables. Then he realized it was much bigger.
According to reports published at the time, the animal was later identified as a young ladder snake, a species native to parts of southwestern Europe. The discovery left Linton deeply frightened, particularly because he had a strong fear of snakes. The moment must have been difficult to process.
Imagine opening a bag of vegetables expecting to find nothing more surprising than a few leaves or pieces of dirt, only to see a reptile moving between the broccoli stems. Linton called for his sister, Ann-Marie Tenkanemin, who helped him deal with the unexpected visitor.
Rather than attempting to handle the snake directly, the family placed it into a plastic container. They eventually took the animal to Dudley Zoo so that experts could identify it and determine whether it posed a danger.
The identification provided an important piece of information: the snake was a ladder snake, and it was not venomous . However, that did not make the discovery any less terrifying for Linton. The incident reportedly happened after the broccoli had already spent several days inside his refrigerator.
That detail makes the story particularly startling because it means the snake had apparently remained hidden among the vegetable stems for some time. Linton later explained that he was relieved the animal had been discovered before it escaped into his home.
Had the snake slipped out of the packaging unnoticed, the family could have encountered it somewhere else in the house. That possibility was especially concerning because Linton lived with vulnerable family members.
He said he was worried about what might have happened if the reptile had disappeared into the home without anyone realizing it was there. The discovery also raised obvious questions about how a snake from southwestern Europe could end up inside a bag of broccoli sold in Britain.
