Soccer Nets Were Invented Because of One Argument Too Many

The most satisfying sight in sports exists because nobody trusted anybody.

<p>The ripple of a net is soccer's exclamation point. But for decades, goals had no nets — and every close shot started a shouting match.</p>

<p>Did it go between the posts or just wide? Under the tape or over it? With no net, disputed goals could sour entire matches.</p>

<p>The net was patented in the early 1890s as a simple evidence machine: if the ball is sitting in it, the argument is over.</p>

<p>It caught on almost immediately. One piece of fishing-style mesh did what years of arguing couldn't — made the goal undeniable.</p>
