Squirrels Are Burying Nuts Wrong On Purpose, And It Is Genius

Those frantic backyard digs hide a strategy scientists only recently pieced together.

Watch a squirrel in fall and it looks like pure panic: dig, drop, cover, sprint, repeat, dozens of times an hour across your entire yard.

But it is not random hoarding. Many tree squirrels sort their stash by type, tucking different nuts in different zones so they can remember where the good stuff is later.

They will even fake-bury a nut, pretending to hide it while a nosy neighbor watches, then scamper off to stash the real prize somewhere private. Backyard espionage at its finest.

All that scattering has an upside for us too. The acorns they forget and never dig up quietly grow into new oak trees, making squirrels accidental gardeners of the neighborhood.
