At Louisa County High School in Virginia, a repaired car can become more than a successful class project. Students in the automotive program help restore donated vehicles that are then given to single mothers who need dependable transportation.
The school works with Giving Words, a local nonprofit supporting families facing transportation difficulties. Under their instructors' guidance, students diagnose faults, carry out maintenance and tackle repairs while learning skills they can use in working life.
The finished vehicle has a purpose beyond the garage. It can help a parent reach work, take children to school or manage daily responsibilities without depending on someone else's ride.
For the students, the handover connects their work to a person. The brakes, wiring and hours of careful attention are no longer an abstract assignment: they are part of a family's next journey.
