You have watched it happen. The steady stare, the deliberate paw, the pen rolling off the desk while your cat maintains eye contact the entire time.

Cats are wired to investigate movement and texture with their paws, and nudging an object teaches them how it behaves. Does it roll? Does it fall? Does it summon the human?

That last part matters most. If knocking a spoon off the counter reliably makes you jump up and react, your cat has learned a very effective way to run the household.

The fix is boring but real: more play, more puzzle feeders, and less dramatic reaction. Give those clever paws a better job and your dishes might finally survive the week.
