It's 3 a.m. and you can't sleep, so you ask the internet a question you would never say out loud. As you type, the suggestions finish your sentence perfectly — because millions of insomniacs got there before you.

The autocomplete dropdown might be the most honest document our species has ever produced. Every anxious symptom, half-remembered movie plot, and 'is it normal to' has been asked so many times the machine sees it coming.

There's a strange comfort in it. You start typing what feels like the most private question of your life, and the internet gently replies: yes, this again, everyone wonders this, you are aggressively normal.

The late-night search session ends the way it always does — forty minutes deep in a topic unrelated to the original question, slightly better informed and no closer to sleep. The history gets cleared. The questions never do.
