The Substitution Trick Smart Teams Use in the Final 20 Minutes
Fresh legs are only half of it. The clock is the real weapon.

Late in a tight match, a coach sends on a substitute and the crowd shrugs. But that swap you barely noticed might be the most calculated move of the entire game.

Fresh legs against exhausted defenders is an obvious edge. Less obvious: substitutions burn clock, break the other team's rhythm, and force opponents to solve a brand-new puzzle while gasping for air.

Coaches also save specialists for specific moments — a sprinter to chase long balls when defenders are cooked, a tall target to attack crosses when desperation sets in.

So when the fourth official raises that board this summer, lean in. You're not watching a personnel change. You're watching a chess clock get slammed.
