The Surprising Reason We Root For The Side Character More Than The Hero

The lead saves the day, but it is the sidekick who steals our whole heart.

Here is something that happens on almost every show. The hero is out there being brave and important, and yet the character you actually love, the one you quote and defend and adore, is the scrappy side character standing just off to the left.

The reason is relatability. Heroes are often too perfect to feel real, while side characters get to be messy, funny, and flawed, which is to say human. We see ourselves in the sidekick far more easily than in the flawless lead.

Side characters also carry the joy. They deliver the jokes, the warmth, the little moments of heart that make a heavy story bearable. They are the salt in the dish, and without them even the grandest tale would taste flat.

So if you have ever loved the sidekick more than the star, you are in excellent company. The hero saves the world, sure. But the side character is the one who felt like a friend, and friends are the ones we remember.
