The Warm-Up Drill Every Team Does That Looks Pointless — It Isn't
That lazy passing circle is hiding a brutal little game.

Arrive early to any match this summer and you'll see it: players standing in a casual circle, pinging passes while one or two teammates chase hopelessly in the middle. It looks like recess.

It's called a rondo, and it's arguably the most important drill in soccer. The circle players must pass under pressure with one or two touches. The chasers learn to hunt in pairs.

Every core skill of the modern game — quick passing, tight control, coordinated pressing — lives inside that innocent little circle. Entire national styles have been built on it.

Best part: there's a loser. Give the ball away and you're in the middle. Watch closely and you'll see world-class athletes genuinely desperate not to be 'it.'
