The Watch Party Snack Everyone Is Suddenly Making, and the Rule You Cannot Break While Serving It

It's not the recipe that matters. It's the timing.

Somewhere between the group stage and the knockout rounds, American watch parties developed their own unwritten constitution — and most of it concerns food.

The centerpiece this summer, according to hosts everywhere, is a loaded snack spread that borrows from all three host nations: something grilled, something dipped, something you'll regret. But the spread itself isn't the rule.

The rule is this: nothing new comes out of the kitchen during open play. Refill at halftime. Restock at stoppages. Anyone who walks in front of the TV carrying a tray during a live attack will be judged, loudly, by people they've known for years.

It sounds ridiculous until you've hosted one. This summer's World Cup across the US, Mexico and Canada has turned living rooms into stadiums, and stadiums have rules. Learn them before the next round.
