It's one of those questions kids ask that adults quietly can't answer. Why is the daytime sky blue, but the sunset a wild blast of orange and red?

Sunlight is a mix of all colors. As it hits the air, blue light scatters far more easily than red, bouncing all over the sky. That scattered blue is what you see overhead all day.

At sunset, the light travels through way more atmosphere to reach you, sideways instead of straight down. By then all the blue has been scattered away, leaving only the reds and oranges.

So blue skies and red sunsets are the same physics, just measured in distance. Sunset is basically what's left after the sky steals all the blue.
