There's A Reason Everything Smells Amazing Right After It Rains, And It Has A Name

That fresh post-storm scent is actually a chemical you can name at parties.

Step outside after a summer shower and there it is, that clean earthy smell that somehow makes the whole world feel reset. Turns out it's not magic, it's chemistry.

The scent is called petrichor, and a big part of it comes from a compound named geosmin, produced by bacteria living in the soil. Raindrops kick tiny amounts of it into the air.

Human noses are freakishly sensitive to geosmin, we can detect it at levels of just a few parts per trillion. That's why one whiff of rain hits so hard.

So that beloved after-rain smell is basically dirt bacteria saying hello. Somehow knowing that makes it even better, not worse.
