The search had already been going on for hours when rescuers finally heard something. Almost impossible to distinguish beneath the wind, rain, and distant sounds of the forest. But one member of the rescue team stopped walking. For several seconds, there was nothing. Then they heard it again.
The rescuers looked at one another. They had been searching for a missing man who had disappeared during a hiking trip the previous afternoon. His family had reported him missing after he failed to return and stopped answering his phone. The weather had made the search extremely difficult.
Heavy rain had turned the trails into mud, visibility was poor, and several areas were considered too dangerous to enter without specialized equipment. But now they had something. The team moved carefully toward the sound. Eventually, one rescuer noticed footprints disappearing beneath a thick layer of wet leaves.
They followed them down a steep slope. At the bottom was a narrow ravine surrounded by trees and rocks. The missing man had fallen into a deep depression between several large rocks. His leg appeared to be pinned, and he was unable to climb out.
The rescuers immediately began organizing a plan. “Stay calm,” one of them called. For the first time in many hours, he knew someone had found him. “I thought nobody was coming,” he said. The rescue team reassured him that they would get him out.
But as they prepared their equipment, they discovered something unexpected. The terrain beneath them was unstable. Rainwater had been flowing through the ravine for hours, weakening the soil around the rocks. One wrong movement could cause more debris to collapse. The rescuers backed away and called for additional equipment.
The man remained trapped below. For several minutes, everything seemed under control. Then someone heard a loud crack. Everyone turned toward the hillside. A section of wet earth had shifted. The rescuers quickly climbed toward safer ground. Seconds later, mud and loose stones came sliding into the ravine.
The missing man disappeared behind a cloud of dust and rain. The rescue team feared the worst. But then they heard his voice. The rescuers immediately changed their strategy. They could no longer safely approach from above. Instead, they began looking for another route.
One team member noticed a narrow opening between two large rocks. It was barely wide enough for a person to crawl through. If they could reach the man from the opposite side, they might be able to free him without disturbing the unstable slope.
He secured a safety rope around himself and slowly entered the narrow passage. Every movement was deliberate. The walls were wet and slippery.
