Flip over your laptop charger and squint at the block. It is covered in tiny numbers and symbols that look like a secret code. Most people ignore them entirely, but they quietly explain how well your gear plays together.

The key figures are the voltage and the wattage, which describe how much power the brick can deliver. Plug a laptop into a charger with less wattage than it wants and it may charge painfully slowly, or not at all under heavy use.
