What Goalkeepers See During a Penalty That You Don't
The folded towel in the net is not laundry. It's a spreadsheet.

Penalty shootouts look like pure luck — a coin flip with extra steps. But glance at the goalkeeper's setup and you'll spot the tell: something small tucked against the net or bottle beside the post.

Modern keepers come armed with research. Analysts compile shooters' habits — favorite side, run-up tells, what they do under pressure — and keepers review notes hidden on bottles and towels right there in the goal.

Then comes the mind game. Keepers delay, stand off-center to bait a shot, wave their arms to shrink the goal in the shooter's mind. Every second of stalling is deliberate.

So during shootouts this summer, watch the keeper between kicks. If they wander to their water bottle, they're not thirsty. They're doing their reading.
