A row of trees does more than soften the appearance of a street. It changes how that street handles sunlight and heat, which helps explain why an exposed sidewalk can feel so different from a shaded one.
Trees intercept sunlight before it reaches pavement and buildings. They also release moisture through their leaves, contributing to cooling through a process called evapotranspiration. The Environmental Protection Agency identifies both shade and this moisture release as ways vegetation helps reduce urban heat.
Concrete, asphalt and other built surfaces can absorb and store heat, then release it later. Replacing greenery with hard surfaces removes some of the natural cooling while adding materials that can keep a neighborhood warm after sunset.
The accompanying street-stump image illustrates that loss of shade; it has not been identified as a documented tree-removal project. Preserving trees and making room for suitable planting can be part of addressing urban heat, alongside the other choices that shape streets and buildings.
