Open any American fridge or kitchen drawer and you will find it: a chaotic archive of sauce packets, soy and hot and ranch, dating back several presidencies.

The psychology is real. Throwing away free, sealed, unexpired food feels wasteful, so the packets survive purge after purge, quietly multiplying.

There is also the fantasy scenario. Someday, we tell ourselves, there will be an emergency taco night with no sauce, and the drawer will finally have its moment.
