Why Your Router Should Never Live On The Floor, According To The Physics
The most common spot for your router is quietly strangling your signal, and moving it is free.
Most people shove the router wherever the cable reaches, usually low on the floor behind the sofa. It feels tidy. It is also one of the easiest ways to sabotage your own internet without realising you are doing it.
Wi-Fi radiates outward like ripples, and it struggles to pass through dense materials. Down on the floor, tucked behind furniture and swallowed by walls, your signal has to fight through everything before it reaches you.
Lift the router up high and out in the open, ideally somewhere central in your home. On a shelf, away from thick walls and big metal appliances, the ripples spread far more freely and reach the rooms that always felt dead.
You do not need new equipment or a call to your provider. A better shelf can genuinely fix rooms that always dropped signal. Sometimes the upgrade you need is not faster internet, just a router that can actually breathe.
