In this fictional family drama, Lucia spends three years caring for her mother-in-law, Rosalind. When Rosalind is dying, her son Brandon does not answer Lucia's calls. Before her death, she presses a small silver key into her daughter-in-law's hand.
The key later opens a box at an attorney's office. Inside are Rosalind's will, financial records and a letter urging Lucia to reclaim her life. The records expose suspicious business payments routed through Rosalind's accounts. Lucia also has evidence that Brandon's absence was a vacation with another woman.
At a family gathering, the attorney presents the documents. An internal company investigation follows, and Brandon can no longer control the conversation by blaming Lucia.
The marriage ends. Lucia uses part of Rosalind's legitimate inheritance to support family caregivers and moves into a peaceful apartment. She keeps the little key as a reminder of Rosalind's final act of support.
