Jessica Fletcher recalled a restaurant meal when her son Hunter's communication device ran out of battery. Hunter, who is autistic and nonspeaking, used the device to help express what he wanted, and its failure interrupted their conversation.
When paper was offered as a substitute, he began drawing a keyboard. That familiar arrangement of letters showed Jessica another way they could communicate when the device was unavailable.
Jessica later had a keyboard tattooed on her forearm, with additional symbols. She said Hunter could use it to spell messages when a charged screen was unavailable, including during water activities. The tattoo became an additional communication option for the pair, based on the keyboard Hunter had drawn himself.
